Originating in 1981, the jazz/pop vocal group, Pastiche, gained a large and local following performing throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. The group’s strong local popularity and esteemed position in the musical community, won them two consecutive San Francisco Jammy Awards (Jazz Music Awards). Grand Prize in the National Harmony Sweepstakes Competition, and billing with such acclaimed artists as Robin Williams, Tina Turner, Dizzy Gillespie, Indigo Girls and Bobby McFerrin.
In 1984, Pastiche recorded an album for Pony/Canyon Records of Tokyo, which was specifically tailored to the Japanese jazz/pop market. The record, entitled “That’s R & Bebop”, was followed by an exclusive tour of Japan with the country’s most popular funk/fusion band, Casiopea. Released in the U.S. in 1987, the album rose to #14 on the Mac Report Chart (Mainly Adult Contemporary) and #16 on the R&R Chart. In August 1992, Pastiche garnered rave reviews after returning to Japan as headline artists at the “Monterey Jazz Festival in Noto”. Sharing the stage with jazz luminaries Richie Cole, Bobby Shew and Bruce Foreman, Pastiche was met with enthusiastic response from Japanese audiences thrilled to have them back.
Pastiche has also been making musical waves in the sports arena. Their soulful and inspired rendition of the National Anthem has made the group hometown favorites with the SF Giants, SF 49ers, Golden State Warriors and the Oakland A’s.
Whether using just their voices or backed by top-notch musicians, Pastiche continues to search for unique creative ways to write, arrange and sing the material they record.
